Person-centred care experts at this year’s Budleigh Salterton Older Persons Day

If you would like to find out more about how a person-centred approach to care can help improve well-being, head along to the Budleigh Salterton Older Persons Day on September 28th and chat to Helen Rushton and Sarah Cundall from Green Tree Court nursing home in Exeter. They’ll be joining over 35 other local organisations at this annual event that brings together information for older people, their carers, and families.

“No two people have the same needs,” explains Helen Rushton, Home Director at Green Tree Court. “Taking a person-centred approach means looking beyond a medical diagnosis and really understanding an individual’s personal needs and preferences. It’s about putting what they want first and building a plan for support around that, giving an individual that vital control over their life that is so important to uphold dignity. That could mean making changes to surroundings to make it easier for an individual to navigate safely and independently. It can mean taking time to find out what really interests an individual, so we can plan meaningful activities to help encourage social interaction and enhance well-being. And it can mean making sure the right equipment and specialist training is in place to enable someone to remain living in their chosen care home right up to the end of their life.”

As well as finding out more about nursing and specialist dementia care at Green Tree Court, there will be lots of other local organisations sharing information and giving talks throughout the day. Exeter University Medical School’s research team will sharing their latest research in Alzheimer’s Disease and other conditions. The Devon & Cornwall Police Crime & Safety Roadshow will be there, with information tables on Internet Safety and Scam Awareness, Fire Safety, Crime Prevention, Trading Standards Property Marking, Environmental Health and the Office of the Police Commissioner. A series of talks and presentations is also planned and will take place at the Church on the Green, directly opposite the Public Hall.
