Nurse Gemma Perrott, who won our Star Award for Clinical Excellence, took a few minutes to chat with us about her role…

“I worked for a year as a nurse in a hospital but found I got a load more experience working at Green Tree Court. It’s different here to hospital and other homes. You aren’t just dishing out meds. I get to know residents. I get to know their families.”

Gemma went on to tell us what she believes sets Green Tree Court apart

It’s a family. When I was newly qualified I was nervous but I’m supported here. The care staff are respectful and the families are great. We have a right laugh!

A lady came here for respite recently and left while I was away on holiday. When I got back she’d left me a note saying thank you. They really appreciate the time we spend together.

We aren’t regimented here like hospitals are. People do what they want as long as they’re safe. We say: “Do as much as you can!” Some of our dementia ladies make tea for everyone and it gives them a sense of purpose. We really try to promote independence.”

It’s the activities that make GTC outstanding.”
