The icing on the cake

We’re always looking for new activities to try, and our recent sugar craft session was a real sweet success. The latest challenge to be taken on by a group of our residents, it was as much a chance to chat with others as to get creative. With the help of an experienced cake decorator, we learned how to transform colourful lumps of sugar paste into all manner of edible decorations, fit for any showstopper.

Merle Weiner, Head of Activities at Green Tree Court said: “We escaped the heatwave in a cool corner of our café to have a go at this very creative art. The soft tactile feel of the paste meant it was a very enjoyable way to spend the afternoon. And seeing the sugar paste take shape gave everyone involved a real sense of achievement and satisfaction. It was also immensely fun, and there was much laughter over whose sugar-dog or sugar-chick looked like the demonstrator’s perfect example!”

Learning new skills, continuing favourite hobbies and meeting up with other people can all make a big difference to wellbeing. At Green Tree Court we organise a wide range of group and individual activities every day. These boost social inclusion, which studies have shown can improve happiness and reduce feelings of loneliness. Our programme of activities in and outside of our care home is also designed to give residents a sense of purpose to help them live well for longer.
