According to The Alzheimer’s Society, there is a small amount of evidence to suggest that massage can help manage symptoms associated with dementia, such as anxiety, agitation and depression.

Since the touching of hands is so familiar, hand massage may be gladly accepted by those living with dementia. A mere five-minutes of gentle hand massage has been shown to elicit a physiological relaxation response. Massage has also been shown to increase serotonin levels. Serotonin or 5-hydroxytryptamine is a monoamine neurotransmitter, and is popularly thought to be a contributor to feelings of wellbeing and happiness.

Hand and foot massages also serve by promoting sleep, alleviating anxiety, communicating support and comfort, inducing deep relaxation and reinforcing a sense of place.  The physical, emotional, and psychosocial distress that leads to behavioral symptoms of dementia can be significantly reduced by skilled massage therapist.
